The day dragged on. Hannah didnât dare tell Michaelâs brothers, but the sound of the gunshots still reverberated through her head. The gruesome pictures heâd sent her still waited on her phone. Even now, she couldnât close her eyes without seeing them.
Layne, Gabrielâs girlfriend, and her little brother, Simon, had joined them at the table half an hour ago. Gabriel had looked so relieved to see them that Hannah had been surprised he didnât run out to hug them both.
Layneâs father had been with them, but he hadnât lingered. David Forrest had left his kids at the table, saying heâd be back soon.
And then heâd hustled off.
Heâd brought a new level of emotion to the table, though. Where before thereâd only been thinly veiled panic, now there was a shred of something like hope.
Gabrielâs hand was linked with Layneâs, identical to the way Nick held on to Adam. Heâd leaned into her and whispered, though not quietly, âI canât believe you got him to help.â
Layne had leaned back into him. âSometimes he surprises me.â
Simon, who was deaf, had watched this, then made a disgusted noise. He signed something.
Gabriel had smiled thinly. âWhatever.â Heâd flicked a pretzel at him.
âWhat did he say?â Hannah had asked.
ââGet a room.ââ
And now they were waiting again.
It had been almost twenty-four hours.
When Hannahâs father walked into the cafeteria, she almost did a double take. He was here? Heâd been right here in this hospital and he wouldnât answer her calls?
He didnât look happy to see her either.
âHannah. How long have you been here?â
She put the cards down. âSince last night.â
âWho has James?â
âMom. Who do you think?â
Michaelâs brothers watched this exchange like a game of tennis. Back. Forth. Waiting for something substantial to be said.
But her father was still fixated on James. âHave you talked to her? Is James okay?â
Something in his voice made her frown. âYeah, heâs fine. Why?â
His expression darkened. âYou should be at home. You shouldnât be here.â
âHave you seen Michael?â said Nick.
The question derailed her fatherâs anger. His shoulders seemed to sag. âYes. Iâve seen him. You can go up. Heâs in room forty-four-fifteen. He wants to see you.â
They almost knocked the table over in their rush for the elevator.
Her father got in their way and put his hands up. âFamily only.â
Layne and Simon drew back to wait with Adam, but Gabriel got
in her fatherâs face. âFuck that,â he said. âThey can all come. Weâve been waiting all dayââ
âHeâs not alone,â said her father. âFor right now, family only.â
That shut them up.
Heâs not alone. Her fatherâs voice was full of foreboding. What did that mean? What had happened?
Hunter stepped back. His face was a little pale. âItâs okay,â he said. âText me. Itâs okay. I can wait.â When they hesitated, he gave Gabriel a shove. âGo!â
They went.
Hannah stood there for a minute, then moved to follow them.
Her father caught her arm. âYou need to go home,â he said. Then he looked past her, at the others. âYou all need to go home.â
âWhatâs going on?â said Adam.
